As a company grows and jobs change, the need to review position responsibilities and expectations may arise. A job analysis is an assessment of a job to define the unique set of knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) needed for successful performance, the associated working conditions of each position, and how that position impacts other areas of the business. Once a job analysis is completed, companies can update hiring processes, develop evaluation methods, assess salaries and promotion criteria, and guide employee learning and development practices.

Job descriptions are helpful tools for both practical and legal reasons; for instance, assisting in the interactive process connected to reasonable accommodation, establishing minimum qualifications, and to support position FLSA classifications.
